AES/EBU to I2S converter chip
NetworkSound, leading supplier of synchronized pro audio distribution over cat5 products and the award
winning Mamba digital snake, releases a single chip FPGA I2S to AES converter for OEM customers. The
new I2S to AES/EBU single chip eliminates the need for multiple external AES/EBU transmitters and receivers.
All the I2S to AES and vice versa conversion is done inside the chip. This enables OEM customers to design
a single chip that can support 4,8,16 and 32 AES/EBU channels to I2S in their end products. The key
advantages of NetworkSound solution are scalability, small foot print, low power consumption and cost
effective compared to multiple chip AES/EBU solution.

The single chip can support up to 32 channels of I2S to AES/EBU conversion. The chip operates in 48k
sample rate for the first revision and an upgrade to 96K would be available on next release. The Word Clock
(WC) can be either from I2S interface (LRClk) or external WC from other AES/EBU devices. The chip will
synchronize using the WC thru an external PLL. Some of the key features of the chip are:
  • 1-32 I2S in to AES/EBU out
  • 1-32 AES/EBU in to I2S out
  • Clocks (In and out) for I2S interface
  • External Word Clock (WC)
  • I2S WC (LRCK)
  • Able to select WC (I2S or EXT) for clock synchronization
  • Low power and small footprint
  • Pin for user bit input/output
  • Pin for validity bit input/output
  • Pin for status bit in/out
  • Signal indicates Z,X and Y frame start
  • Entire  chip operates on single clock (MCLK)
The design would support customers to program the U,V and S bits on each AES/EBU frame as they wish. Design
support and schematic to design in the chip would be provided to OEM customers. For further information, please
